INDIANA SECTION OF THE MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

CITATION TO

Andrew Rich

The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.

This year’s recipient is Professor Andrew Rich who has been an active contributor to the Indiana Section of the MAA. In fact, Dr. Rich embarked on his journey with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) as a college student in 1975. In 1992, he joined the Indiana Section to serve as a faculty member at Manchester College. Over the years, Dr. Rich has delivered numerous talks on a wide array of mathematical topics at Indiana Section meetings. The topics and relevant details of his talks can be easily found in the archived abstracts of IN-MAA history.

Dr. Rich dedicated himself to the Section to serve as Secretary in the Indiana MAA Executive Board from 2008 to 2013, and next ascended to Vice Chair, Chair, and Past Chair in the Indiana MAA Executive Board during 2016 to 2018. At the end of his exemplary tenure as the Secretary of the Executive Board, he compiled a wonderful list of all decisions/approvals that the board had then made over the past 10 years. People then serving on the Executive Board remember it as “Andy’s Decade Decision List.”

Beyond his administrative roles, Dr. Rich was deeply involved in academia, coaching Manchester University's math team for many years and frequently grading problems for the Indiana College Math Competition. As the Oppenheim Professor of Mathematics at Manchester, Dr. Rich took on multiple responsibilities, including serving on various departmental and college committees, acting as department chair, co-director of curriculum, and faculty secretary. His commitment to nurturing young minds and fostering a love for mathematics was evident through initiatives such as the weekly problem competition. Dr. Rich retired in 2022; however, his passion for mathematics and the Indiana section remains vibrant and unwavering.

In recognition of his numerous contributions to mathematics at the university, state, and national level, we congratulate Dr. Andrew Rich as the recipient of the 2025 Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award.
